Polonne lies in the north of Khmelnytskyi Oblast, on the Khomora River, in a landscape of fields, ponds and woodland. From above, the town has a loose plan. Low-rise streets spread out along the river and the main roads, while the railway cuts a strong line through the town and splits into branches at the junction.
The town is known for its porcelain factory, founded in the late nineteenth century, which made Polonne a recognised name in Ukrainian ceramics. It also has a long history as a fortified town on the borderlands of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Over the centuries, its population and fortunes changed many times.

Several railway lines meet at Polonne, crossing the town in long straight strokes. They bring a clear geometric structure to an otherwise low, spread-out plan.
