Ponnur lies in the Guntur region of Andhra Pradesh, on the low, level ground of the Krishna delta, not far from the Bay of Bengal. On a map the town is a compact centre of streets and markets. Around it spreads a wide agricultural landscape. The delta is one of the most productive farming regions in southern India, watered by a network of canals drawn from the Krishna.
