Poyang lies in northeastern Jiangxi, on the eastern side of the lake that shares its name. Poyang Lake is the largest freshwater lake in China, and its size changes dramatically between wet and dry seasons. The land around the town is low and flat, crossed by rivers, channels and ponds. Water shapes the map as much as roads do.
The town itself is a compact grid of streets, with new districts extending along the main roads. Around it lie fields, embankments and the winding shapes of waterways that feed the lake. The wider wetlands are well known as a wintering ground for large numbers of migratory birds, which draws attention to the whole region.
