Prachin Buri is the capital of the province of the same name in eastern Thailand, a couple of hours' drive east of Bangkok. The town lies along the Prachin Buri River, which further downstream becomes part of the Bang Pakong system flowing to the Gulf of Thailand. The river's loops are the defining shape on its map.
The older centre sits close to the water, with a compact grid of streets, markets and government buildings, while newer development spreads along the main roads. Beyond the town, the land opens into flat rice fields and orchards. To the north, the ground rises toward the forests of Khao Yai and Thap Lan national parks.
The town is well known in Thailand for Chao Phraya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital, whose early twentieth-century European-style building now houses a centre for Thai traditional medicine.
