Prainha lies in Pará on the lower Amazon, in the long stretch of river downstream from Santarém. The town faces the water, and on a map the river dominates everything: a broad expanse of channel, sandbanks and floodplain, with the settlement itself a small grid of streets lining the bank and looking out across the current.
The layout is modest and practical. A few streets run parallel to the riverfront, where boats dock and trade happens, while cross streets lead inland toward higher ground. Beyond the town, roads and tracks thin out quickly, because in this part of the Amazon the river remains the main route between communities.
