Pratāpgarh is a district town in the far south of Rajasthan, near the border with Madhya Pradesh, where the Aravalli hills meet the Malwa plateau. Unlike the desert cities of the state's west, it is surrounded by greener, rolling country. From above, a dense old centre of narrow, winding lanes is ringed by newer, more regular neighbourhoods and roads leading out across the hills.
The town is known across India for Thewa, a traditional craft in which fine gold work is fused onto coloured glass, practised here by a small number of families for generations. The district's wooded hills also hold the Sita Mata Wildlife Sanctuary, and seasonal streams cut across the farmland that surrounds the town.
