Pretoria, part of the City of Tshwane, is South Africa's administrative capital and the seat of the executive. The city lies in a valley between east–west ridges, which gives its map a clear horizontal structure: a dense grid on the valley floor, and lines of hills to the north and south that the roads cross through narrow passes.
Church Square marks the historic centre, a large open square from which the original grid extends in all directions. To the east, the Union Buildings, designed by Herbert Baker, sit on Meintjieskop in terraced gardens overlooking the city. The Apies River runs north through the centre, and eastern suburbs such as Hatfield and Brooklyn spread over gentle slopes.
Pretoria is widely known as the Jacaranda City for the thousands of trees that turn its streets purple each spring. South of the centre, the Voortrekker Monument stands on a hilltop.
