Prudnik lies in the Opole Voivodeship in southern Poland, close to the Czech border. On a map the town sits in a valley along the Prudnik river. The foothills of the Opawskie Mountains rise to the south and southwest.
The old town has a compact market square and a medieval castle tower. On the forested edge of town is a Franciscan monastery where Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński was interned in 1954–1955, now a place of remembrance.
