Puebloviejo lies in the Magdalena department on Colombia's Caribbean coast, on a narrow strip of land between the sea and the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, a large coastal lagoon system. On a map the municipality is defined by water: the long coastline to the north, the broad lagoon to the south and a coastal road running along the thin barrier of land between them.
The municipality includes stilt villages built directly over the water of the Ciénaga Grande, such as Nueva Venecia and Buenavista, where homes, schools and churches stand on piles above the lagoon. Fishing has long been the main livelihood, and the wetlands form part of an internationally recognised protected area.
