P’yŏngsŏng is the capital of South Pyongan Province in North Korea, located a short distance north of Pyongyang. It is a comparatively young city, developed in the second half of the twentieth century, and its map reflects that. It has wide main avenues, large rectangular blocks and a layout that follows a plan rather than the older patterns of village lanes.
The city is associated with science and education, and research institutes and higher education institutions have been based here.
