Qalqīlyah lies at the western edge of the West Bank, where the hills slope down towards the coastal plain and the Mediterranean is only a short distance away. The town is compact and dense. On a map its streets form a tight cluster, with a few main roads leading out, and the built-up area gives way abruptly to agricultural land.
The surrounding fields and orchards have long been central to local life, and the area has a reputation for fruit and vegetable growing. The town is also known for its zoo, which for many years has been the only one in the West Bank.
