Rawmarsh lies just north of Rotherham in South Yorkshire, on rising ground above the valley of the River Don. Its map reflects the region's industrial past: older terraced streets running in tight rows, larger interwar and postwar housing estates with curving roads, and main routes linking it to Parkgate, Rotherham and the surrounding villages.
Like much of this area, Rawmarsh grew with coal mining and heavy industry, and many of the sites once used for pits and works have since become housing, green space or retail.
