Raxaul lies on the flat Gangetic plain in the north of Bihar, directly on the border with Nepal. Across the line is Birgunj, and together the two towns form one of the main crossing points between India and Nepal. On a map they almost meet, separated by the border and a narrow river channel.
Much of the trade between the two countries passes through here, by road and by rail. A railway links Raxaul to a freight depot on the Nepali side, and that link shapes the layout of the town, with tracks and main roads heading north toward the border and south into Bihar.

A railway runs from Raxaul across the border to a freight depot near Birgunj. Its line is one of the clearest straight marks on the poster.
