Rāyadrug lies in the Anantapur region of Andhra Pradesh, close to the Karnataka border, in a dry landscape of rocky outcrops and open fields. The town's name refers to its hill fort, which stands on a steep granite hill above the streets. From above, the hill is an obvious landmark, with the town spreading at its base.
The older streets are closely packed and irregular, with temples and markets among them, while newer areas extend along the main roads. The town is also known as a centre for garment making, especially denim.
