Reus lies on the plain of the Camp de Tarragona, a few kilometres inland from the Mediterranean. From above, its oldest part is easy to find: an almond-shaped core of narrow streets enclosed by a ring of boulevards, the ravals, that follow the line of the former walls. Beyond the ring, the city spreads out in more regular blocks.
Reus is known as the birthplace of the architect Antoni Gaudí, and the city has a significant collection of Modernista buildings, including Lluís Domènech i Montaner's Institut Pere Mata. It also has a long commercial history, including a strong link with vermouth, and an airport serving the Costa Daurada.
