Rheinfelden (Baden) lies on the north bank of the Rhine in Baden-Württemberg, directly opposite the Swiss town of Rheinfelden in Aargau. The river forms the border, and on the map it runs as a broad band between the two towns, connected by bridges that make them feel like one place split in two.
The German town grew in the late nineteenth century with the construction of a hydroelectric power station on the Rhine, one of the first large river power plants in Europe. The energy it produced drew industry, and the town took shape around it on the terraces above the river.
