Riberalta lies in the far north of Bolivia, in the Beni department, close to where the Madre de Dios flows into the Beni River. On the map, the town sits on a bank above wide, winding water, and dense lowland forest surrounds it. The street grid is regular and generous, with the river curving along one side.
The town is the centre of Bolivia's Brazil nut industry, and processing plants for nuts gathered in the surrounding forest are an important part of local life. Streets are broad and often unpaved, and roads and rivers link the town with Guayaramerín and the Brazilian border.
