Seen from above, it is a compact town of mostly regular blocks surrounded by fields, orchards and irrigation channels, with the capital's outer suburbs gradually drawing closer. The name joins robat, an old word for a caravanserai or roadside inn, with the personal name Karim, which suggests the town began as a stopping point on a travel route.
