Rochefort lies on the Charente River a few kilometres from the Atlantic, in the Charente-Maritime department. It was founded in 1666 as a royal naval arsenal under Colbert, and its plan shows this clearly. A rigorous grid of straight streets and rectangular blocks sits on a bend of the river, with the former dockyards and slipways along the water's edge.
The Corderie Royale, the royal ropeworks, stretches along the riverbank for more than three hundred metres, a single long building that is easy to pick out on the map. The replica frigate Hermione was built in the old dry dock here and sailed to America in 2015. Downstream, the Martrou transporter bridge spans the Charente.
