Rosario sits on the western bank of the Paraná River, and the contrast on the map is striking. On one side lies a dense, regular grid of square blocks. On the other, the river opens into a vast delta of islands, channels and wetlands that stretches for kilometres. The city meets the water along a high bank lined with parks and reclaimed port land.
Long boulevards break the grid, and the large Parque de la Independencia forms a green block near the centre. On the riverfront stands the National Flag Memorial, marking the place where Manuel Belgrano first raised the Argentine flag in 1812.
