Russellville lies in the Arkansas River Valley, in the west-central part of the state, with the Ozark Mountains rising to the north and the Ouachitas to the south. Just south of the city, the Arkansas River widens into Lake Dardanelle, a reservoir whose long, branching arms reach into the edges of town.
On the map, the older centre follows a regular grid near the railway, while newer development spreads along main roads and towards the lake. Arkansas Tech University occupies a large campus close to downtown, and Interstate 40 runs along the northern side of the city, giving it a strong east–west axis.
