Rutigliano lies in the province of Bari, in Apulia, a short distance inland from the Adriatic coast. The historic centre is a tight knot of narrow lanes and courtyards, with a medieval tower and the main church standing within it. Around it, later streets form a more regular pattern, and then the town gives way to farmland planted with vines and olive trees.
The town is known throughout Italy for its terracotta whistles, the fischietti. These small painted clay figures are made by local craftspeople and celebrated every January at the feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot. The surrounding countryside is also known for table grapes, and the neat rows of vineyards shape the landscape around the town.
