Saint-Martin-d'Hères is directly east of Grenoble, on the flat floor of the Grésivaudan valley. From above, the town reads as a continuation of the city: long avenues, blocks of housing from several decades, and the ring road and rail lines that cross the valley.
Its best-known feature is the Domaine universitaire. Most of the Grenoble university campus stands here, spread out across a wide area on the south bank of the Isère.
