San José Pinula lies in the department of Guatemala, a short distance east of the capital, in the mountainous terrain of the central highlands. From above, the town reads as a compact centre with streets branching out along ridgetops. Steep, wooded ravines cut through the land between the built-up areas and leave long green gaps in the street pattern.
Like many towns in this part of the country, the centre follows a traditional Spanish colonial layout, with a central square and a church and a small grid of blocks around them.
