Sanhe lies directly east of Beijing, separated from the capital's Tongzhou district by the Chaobai River. Together with two neighbouring counties, it forms a small piece of Hebei province that is cut off from the rest of Hebei and surrounded by Beijing and Tianjin. On the map, the river is the clearest boundary, with dense development running right up to the bank.
The Yanjiao area at the western edge of Sanhe has grown rapidly as a place to live for people who work in Beijing. That growth shows in the street pattern: large rectangular blocks of apartment complexes, wide arterial roads and few small lanes. It looks like a city built mostly in recent decades.
