Sanremo has room to grow in only one direction, along the coast. The town stretches as a narrow band beside the Ligurian Sea, with a harbour and seafront promenades at its edge. Behind it the ground climbs quickly into hills cut by terraces and scattered with greenhouses, a legacy of the flower growing that gave this stretch the name Riviera dei Fiori.
Above the modern centre sits La Pigna, the medieval quarter. Its lanes coil tightly up a hillside in a shape that locals compare to a pine cone.
