Santa Luzia lies just northeast of Belo Horizonte, within the capital's metropolitan area, and its layout reflects two eras. The historic centre sits on a ridge above the Rio das Velhas, a legacy of the eighteenth-century gold-rush settlements of Minas Gerais. Below and around it, much larger residential districts have spread across the hills and valleys as the metropolis has grown.
The old town preserves colonial churches and houses along its main street, which follows the line of the ridge. The river runs past the foot of the hill and was once an important route in the region. Today most residents live in the newer neighbourhoods, many of which commute to Belo Horizonte, while the historic core retains its separate character.
