São Gonçalo lies on the eastern side of Guanabara Bay, directly beside Niterói and across the water from Rio de Janeiro. It is one of the most populous municipalities in the state. Its map is almost entirely filled with residential streets spread over rolling ground of small hills and valleys, broken here and there by green slopes too steep to build on.
Unlike the dramatic peaks and beaches of Rio, São Gonçalo's shoreline is quieter, with inlets, river mouths and mangrove edges along the bay. Main roads such as the BR-101 cross the municipality and link it to Niterói and the Rio–Niterói Bridge, drawing long lines through the otherwise intricate street pattern.
