São João is a municipality in the agreste of Pernambuco, the transitional region between the humid coast and the dry sertão of northeastern Brazil. From above, the town is compact, with a small grid of streets around its centre and a church square that anchors the layout, as is common in towns in the interior of the Northeast.
Beyond the urban area, the map spreads into a rural landscape of rolling hills, pastures and small farms. Unpaved roads run between the properties and the smaller settlements in the municipality, some following ridges, some following valleys.
