Sayanogorsk sits on the Yenisei River in the south of Khakassia, where the steppe meets the first ridges of the Western Sayan. The town was built in the second half of the twentieth century, and its map shows it: large residential blocks laid out in regular microdistricts, broad avenues between them, and a clear separation between housing and the industrial zone.
Upstream, the Yenisei enters a narrow mountain gorge. There the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric station, the most powerful in Russia, holds back a long reservoir. The dam and its power explain much of why the town exists, including the large aluminium smelter on the plain nearby. On the map, the river is the dominant line, broad and decisive.
