Sebauh lies upriver from Bintulu in Sarawak, on the Malaysian side of Borneo. The town grew where the Kemena River offered a landing, and the map still shows that origin plainly: a compact cluster of streets pressed against the bank, with the river's broad loops dominating everything around it.
Beyond the edge of town the landscape switches between two textures. Oil palm estates lay down orderly networks of access roads, while patches of forest and wetland stay irregular and largely unmarked.
