Segezha is in central Karelia, where the Segezha River runs towards Lake Vygozero and the White Sea–Baltic Canal passes on its way north. The town grew up around its large pulp and paper mill, which remains its best-known industry and gave its name to a major Russian timber company. The Murmansk railway also runs through the town, linking it with the far north and with Saint Petersburg.
