Segovia, in Castile and León, is one of the most distinctive city shapes in Spain. The old town sits on a long, narrow ridge between the valleys of the Eresma and Clamores rivers, and its outline from above is often compared to a ship, with the Alcázar forming the prow at the western point and the walls tracing the edges of the rock.
At the eastern end the Roman aqueduct crosses the Plaza del Azoguejo on its famous double tier of granite arches, carrying water to the town for many centuries. Between the aqueduct and the Alcázar, the late Gothic cathedral rises over a tight network of lanes and small squares.
