Sel’tso lies in Bryansk Oblast in western Russia, on the Desna River, a short distance upstream from the city of Bryansk. The land here is low and wooded, and the river winds through it in broad bends with meadows and oxbows along its course. On the map, the Desna is the organising line, with the town set along one bank.
The town has a modest street pattern of residential blocks and older wooden houses, with industrial areas and a rail line on its outskirts. Beyond the built-up area, forest dominates the map, broken only by roads, clearings and the river floodplain.
