Semey Map Poster & Print
Semey, called Semipalatinsk until 2007, lies on the Irtysh River in north-eastern Kazakhstan. The river is the city's main feature on the map. It divides the city in two and branches into channels and islands as it flows north-west across the steppe. The older centre sits on the right bank, with a regular grid of streets.
Several bridges link the two banks, including a suspension bridge opened in 2001, one of the longest in the country. On the left bank, newer districts spread across flat ground. Beyond the built-up area the map opens into river meadows, pine forest and steppe, which give the edges of the poster a looser, quieter texture.
Fyodor Dostoevsky served in exile here in the 1850s, and the poet Abai Kunanbayev came from the surrounding region. The city is also associated with the former Soviet nuclear test site to the west. A Semey map poster shows a long-established river city where the Irtysh shapes every approach.
