Shahecheng is the urban centre of Shahe, a county-level city in the Xingtai area of southern Hebei. It sits on the western edge of the North China Plain, where the flat farmland starts to rise toward the Taihang Mountains. On a map, the city is laid out in a regular grid, with wide avenues crossing at right angles.
Shahe is known as one of China's major centres of flat glass production, and industrial zones take up large areas around the city. From above, the factory sites appear as big rectangular blocks beside rail lines and main roads. Residential districts fill the grid between them.
