Shahr-e Kord sits at around 2,000 metres in the central Zagros, which makes it one of the highest provincial capitals in Iran. The city occupies a wide upland plain. On a map its streets spread across level ground, and the surrounding mountains appear as open, unbuilt space. Winters here are cold and snowy, which is unusual for an Iranian city.
The centre is a fairly compact grid of avenues and squares. Newer residential districts extend outward in straighter, more regular blocks. Main roads lead north-east toward Isfahan and into the mountain valleys of the province, and farmland and orchards fill the plain between the city and nearby towns.
Shahr-e Kord is the capital of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, a province often called the roof of Iran, and it is closely linked with the Bakhtiari people and their seasonal migrations.
