Shalkar lies in the Atyrau Region of western Kazakhstan, on the vast lowland plain that stretches north of the Caspian Sea. The terrain is flat and dry. Settlements show on the map as small, self-contained clusters of streets in open steppe, linked by long roads and tracks that run for many kilometres with barely a turn.
Several places across Kazakhstan share the name Shalkar, a word associated with wide, open water, which says something about how much water counts in this landscape.
