Shawnee lies on the western side of the Kansas City metro area, in Johnson County. From above, its northern edge follows the Kansas River, while the rest of the city stretches south across gently rolling land. Older streets near the historic downtown keep to a simple grid, and newer neighbourhoods further west curve around hills and small creeks.
The city takes its name from the Shawnee people, who were moved to this area in the nineteenth century. Its downtown includes Old Shawnee Town, a recreated pioneer village. Nearby, Shawnee Mission Park, one of the largest parks in the county, surrounds a lake and forms a big open space on the map.
