Shawnee is a city in central Oklahoma, east of Oklahoma City, and the seat of Pottawatomie County. It was founded in the 1890s, when the land was opened to settlement, and grew quickly as a railway town. From above, it shows a classic American prairie grid: a downtown of regular blocks, residential streets extending outward and section-line roads running out into the surrounding farmland.
The North Canadian River passes north of the city in a wide, meandering course, and its wooded bottomland makes a soft, irregular band against the straight lines of the grid.
