Shchuchinsk lies in the Burabay district of Aqmola region in northern Kazakhstan, on the shore of Lake Shchuchye. The lake gives the town its name, from the Russian word for pike, and on the map its broad, rounded outline sits right against the streets. The town stretches back from the water in a regular grid of blocks, typical of the region's twentieth-century towns.
Around Shchuchinsk stretch the forests and granite hills of the Kokshetau upland, a rare wooded landscape in the middle of the Kazakh steppe. The area, known as Burabay or Borovoe, is one of the country's most popular holiday regions. Resorts, sanatoriums and summer houses are scattered among the pines along several lakes.
