Shelby is a charter township in Macomb County, north of Detroit. Its map is built on the mile-road grid that covers much of south-east Michigan, with major roads running every mile in both directions. Each square mile holds its own mix of subdivisions, shopping centres and remaining open land.
The Clinton River crosses the township, and its winding course breaks the grid with a natural line. Along its banks, parks and wooded areas follow the valley, providing a softer strip of green across the drawing. The Shelby map poster shows that combination clearly: a strict framework of straight roads and a river that ignores it.
