Shelton lies on the west bank of the Housatonic River in Connecticut, facing Derby across the water. On the map, the river is the defining line: a broad dark curve with the old downtown packed along it, where a dam and a canal once powered the factories that built the town in the nineteenth century.
Moving away from the river, the plan changes quickly. The compact streets of downtown climb into residential neighbourhoods, then into the looser, curving roads of the northern part of the city, where former farmland, woods and reservoirs break the pattern.
