Shituo is a town within Chongqing municipality, in the hilly country east of the main city. The terrain decides almost everything on the map here. Roads do not run in straight lines. They wind along ridges and valleys, and the built-up area settles into whatever flat ground the landscape allows.
Rendered in black and white, this gives Shituo a very different look from towns on a plain. The streets appear as curving threads, the blocks are irregular, and the edges of the settlement dissolve gradually into scattered buildings and small farm plots on the slopes. Water, where it appears, follows the lowest ground and shapes the lines around it.
