Shuangyashan lies in the east of Heilongjiang Province, in China's far northeast. The city's name refers to a pair of hills said to resemble two ducks, a feature that has given the place its identity. It developed mainly as a coal-mining centre, and the industry has shaped both its economy and the layout of its districts.
The urban area is spread across a valley surrounded by low hills, with separate mining districts connected to the central city by roads and railway lines.
