Siegen occupies a series of valleys in the hills of the Siegerland, in the southeast of North Rhine-Westphalia. The Sieg River runs through the city centre, and side valleys branch off in several directions, so the built area spreads in a star-like pattern with wooded ridges in between.
The old town sits on a hill above the river, crowned by the Upper Castle, while the Lower Castle stands closer to the centre. Streets on the slopes curve and wind, some climbing steeply, and the university campuses occupy separate sites on the heights, visible on the map as distinct clusters.
