Siirt lies in the uplands of southeastern Anatolia, where the land folds into ridges and valleys that drain toward the Tigris basin. The city itself sits on elevated ground, and on a map its streets bend with the contours instead of forming a strict grid. Roads wind outward toward the valleys, and newer districts reach along the flatter shelves of land around the older core.
From above, the pattern looks dense in the middle and loose at the edges. Compact blocks around the historic centre thin out into longer roads that follow the terrain. The rivers of the province cut deep channels through the surrounding country, so the road network is shaped by the few directions the land allows.
Siirt is best known for its pistachios, which carry the city's name, and for its traditional woven blankets and slow-roasted büryan meat. The Great Mosque in the centre dates from the Seljuk period.
