Songo is a town in Uíge province in northern Angola, a region of rolling hills, rivers and dense vegetation. On a map it appears as a modest cluster of streets around a main road, with houses spreading out along the routes into the surrounding countryside. The built area is small compared with the landscape around it, which fills most of the frame.
Uíge province has long been a farming region. Its humid climate and red soils once made it one of Angola's main coffee-growing areas. Around Songo, farmland, forest patches, streams and scattered villages make a soft, irregular pattern, and the straighter lines of the town's roads stand out against it.
