Sonsón sits high in the Andes of southeastern Antioquia, at an altitude where the air is cool and mist often settles on the hills. From above, the town is a neat grid of streets arranged around a central plaza, laid out on a shelf of land with steep slopes falling away on several sides.
It is one of the older towns of the Antioquian highlands and has kept much of its traditional architecture: whitewashed houses with wooden balconies and tiled roofs lining straight streets. The cathedral and main square anchor the centre, and roads leave town in long zigzags down into the valleys.
