Sorgues sits a few kilometres north of Avignon, in the flat country where the rivers Ouvèze and Sorgue meet just before joining the Rhône. In the fourteenth century, the Avignon popes kept a residence here. Much later, in the summer of 1912, Picasso and Braque both worked in the town. Braque's papier collé experiments date from that stay.
On a map, water is what defines Sorgues. Rivers and channels curve across the town, dividing the older centre from the neighbourhoods around it. The Rhône, broad and slow, marks the western edge.
